Position Summary

Black & McDonald Limited is actively seeking an experienced Sr. Mechanical Estimator to join our Industrial Team.  Reporting to the Western Industrial Region Project Manager, the Sr. Mechanical Estimator's main responsibility will be to work as part of a team and/or as the team lead on various estimate classes. Must be able to work independently to produce estimates of the highest quality.  Must be able to lead and/or develop estimates with a focus towards Mechanical construction to a level of detail to allow execution of the project.  Understand the differences between unit rate estimating and lumpsum estimating and tailor the output.  The successful candidate will reside at our office located in Calgary, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop cost data as well as detailed and factored construction estimates for proposals or contract negotiations
  • Prepare and present estimate plans, estimate schedules, man-hour budgets
  • Lead various estimate planning, verification and review meetings
  • Interpret documentation, specifications, design drawings to determine material costs and quantities
  • Offer guidance and mentorship to Junior team members
  • Lead & compile estimates for closing
  • Ability to handle multiple complex priorities
  • Assist in investigating requirements for estimating and/or cost control
  • Collect and classify cost engineering data as directed for benchmarking
  • Perform routine data analysis and development as directed
  • Analyze aspects of Cost Reporting and reconcile with accounting
  • Collect and provide data entry to historical reporting
  • Review costing and coding and correct as needed
  • Ensure impacts of changes are incorporated into budgets and forecasts as applicable
  • Other duties as assigned by your direct supervisor

Education & Skill Requirements

  • Must have experience working on construction contractor side
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in the construction industry
  • Minimum of seven (7) years progressive estimating experience in the piping mechanical and structural estimating for construction and fabrication projects, $250 Million
  • Experience in bidding large scale Mechanical projects
  • Electrical, instrumentation, heat trace, scaffolding and insulation/fireproofing experience will be considered an asset
  • Preference will be given to candidates that possess both relevant trade experience and technical education
  • Strong leadership experience with the ability to mentor junior members of the team
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks and meet deadlines for normal functions and special assignments
  • Attention to detail, mathematical, analytical skills and accuracy
  • Service orientated with the ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with internal and external clients
  • Accubid Enterprise experience an asset
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret engineering and vendor specifications and drawings
  • Excellent verbal communications skills are required
  • Proficiency in technical writing skills will be beneficial
  • Focused on details, highly organized and works effectively with shifting priorities and rapid change
  • Intermediate computer skills: Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Projects)
  • Self-motivated and a hard working doer who works well in a team environment
