Job Description

​Reporting to the Western Industrial General Manager, the Western Industrial HSE Manager is responsible to oversee all Industrial Regional workplaces to ensure compliance with company, client, and government policies, procedures, acts and regulations.  The Western Industrial HSE Manager will ensure proper application and use of Black & McDonald's Safety Management System. The successful candidate will reside at our office located at 3355 114 Ave SE Calgary, AB.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Accountable to the General Manager for providing professional HSE expertise toward the integration of an effective Safety Management System
  • Accountable to promote a management culture that recognizes the interdependence of environment, health, safety, quality and production; integrates loss control considerations into every facet of the business
  • Provide active leadership direction and guidance to the HSE department and Black & McDonald management within the development, implementation and continuous improvement of loss control systems and processes
  • Effective implementation of the hazard/risk assessment process to ensure the correct level of control is being applied to the risk factors
  • Assist management in leading and coaching the workforce through safety and loss control techniques
  • Ensure incidents are recognized, investigated, analyzed and reported in a timely/valued manner
  • Provide measures of loss and risk management improvement through incident-trend analyses, benchmarking and predictable forecasting of performance, relative to the annual business goals
  • Maintain current knowledge of legislative changes, and industry trends and practices regarding HSE
  • Oversee and manage the Return to Work and WCB Claims Management processes
  • Responsible for the staff selection, training, development and performance of the HSE personnel
  • Coordinate site HSE Managers, Supervisors & Advisor(s) activity and ensure that the duties, responsibilities and authority are clearly defined
  • Assist, advise and coach organization and staff with;
    • Hazard identification and control 
    • Inspections 
    • Investigations 
    • Reports
    • Orientations 
    • Training requirements 
    • Project Safety Plans
    • Project Hazard Assessments & Environmental Assessments
  • Review incident and inspection reports and ensure that corrective action and follow-up is taken
  • Review and investigate problems not resolved by site supervisors and contractors 
  • Conduct random work site inspections to ensure compliance with company policy and legislation
  • Review the purchase and maintenance of safety equipment
  • Conduct / Lead HSE Audits
  • Other duties as assigned by your direct supervisor

Education & Skill Requirements

  • 5 years of related work experience and the completion of in-house training courses may substitute for formal education. This may include experience in the Construction / Industrial trades
  • A strong communicator, both in writing and spoken communications
  • Articulate and confident standing up and delivering to large audiences
  • Organized, a self-starter and an inspirational leader of your team
  • Valid Construction Safety Training Systems (CSTS-09), First Aid & CPR & any additional safety certifications
  • Valid class 5 drivers' license (with clean abstract)
