Job Description

​The Building Operator is responsible for the safe operation of the Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC) facility. They will maintain, investigate and resolve problems relating to the physical plant and HVAC systems to ensure continuing operation.  This position is on a rotating shift basis seven (7) days per week including day, afternoon, and midnight shifts.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assumes operating responsibility for the physical plant including all HVAC systems
  • Helps keeps all physical plant and equipment in safe and proper working condition
  • Complete work such as:
    • Perform preventive maintenance work on physical plant-related equipment
    • Troubleshoot equipment to locate & repair problems
    • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications
    • Complete filter changes
    • Replace washers/faucets; clear sinks, toilets and drains; clear grease traps/sumps; re-pack valves; replace pumps/motors; reset breakers, etc.
    • Replace lamps and bulbs
    • Conduct water treatment tests
  • Perform daily rounds and log readings
  • Complete maintenance records and work orders; input histories and comments as required
  • Observe and implement safety regulations and practices
  • Observe and implement applicable regulations made under the Provincial and Federal statues and Municipal by-laws
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all shops and mechanical rooms
  • Participate and support other duties as assigned to assist other maintenance trades
  • Conduct testing of the emergency generator system

Desired Skills & Experience
  • ​4th Class Power Engineer or Trades Certificate of Qualification or equivalent
  • A minimum of 3 years experience in all aspects of physical plant operations and maintenance, preferably in a hospital environment
  • Working knowledge of building services including air conditioning, refrigeration and electrical and mechanical equipment controls and systems
  • Knowledge of the Health and Safety Act and all applicable CSA Codes
  • Must be able to speak, read & write in English
  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations including but not limited to: use or wear of equipment or protective devices or clothing for safety purposes, report any known contravention of this Act or regulations or the existence of any hazards
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills required
  • Follow instructions both written and verbal

  • Maintain clear and courteous two way radio and/or phone etiquette
