Job Description

Position Summary

The Ottawa Region is seeking a Estimator/Project Manager who will be working within the Utility Division. Reporting to the Division Manager, the successful imcubent will be responsible for estimating electrical utility jobs. The successful candidate will use his/her experience and technical skills to work alone and as part of a team to meet service requirements. The Estimator/Project Manager will analyze costs of and prepare estimates, as well as provide technical and administrative support to project operations as it relates to estimating, reporting and monitoring progress of projects, planning and scheduling, and dealing with project change.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare cost estimates of materials, labour and equipment for construction utility projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings and specifications.
  • Advise on tendering procedures, examine and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards and conduct negotiations.
  • Establish and maintain tendering process, set up cost monitoring, reporting systems and procedures.
  • Coordinate price packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers and architects regarding tenders.
  • Participate in site review, tender review, tender hand-off, project closing and operational/sector meetings with the Senior Estimator, Project Manager, and Purchasing as required.
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors.
  • Liaise, consult and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors, and prepare economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
  • Conduct material and equipment purchasing for secured jobs.
  • Manage and provide leadership for safety, environment, and quality programs and policies
  • In conjunction with the Department Manager, and/or Division Manager establish project objectives, policies, procedures and performance standards within boundaries of company policy and contract specifications
  • Assume responsibility for work outcomes and results of other workers
  • Build and maintain customer and supplier/vendor relationships
  • Represent company in project meetings and attend strategy meetings
  • Prepare and submit construction project budget estimates as required
  • Plan and prepare construction schedules and milestones and monitor progress
  • Prepare contracts and negotiate revisions, changes and additions to contractual agreements with consultants, clients, suppliers and subcontractors
  • Prepare progress reports and issue progress schedules to direct report
  • Review work/contracts/WIP for areas of risk and correct deficiencies
  • Perform other duties as required
Desired Skills & Experience

  • Graduate of Electrical Engineering or Construction Technology program with related work experience, or,
  • 5-7 years practical experience as a qualified tradesperson in the electrical field.
  • Candidates must be proficient in using MS applications (Word, Excel).
  • Contract Management
  • Previous experience with estimating and drawing software would be considered an asset.
  • Blue print reading and project/structural design interpretation
  • Knowledge of electrical equipment and related components.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
